My first stop when I arrived to the desert was Dick’s Sporting Goods. My purchase of a bright green Frogg Togg Chilly Pad was definitely an experienced Senior move. The 8:00 am morning matches were pleasant enough. The afternoon doubles, however, were more furnace-like (between 90 and 100 degrees).
My biggest regret was that I didn’t watch more matches. If I wasn’t playing I was looking for air conditioning. Also, there was very little shade to watch the matches from. Another issue was there were limited chairs and viewing areas. Since I am able to drive from Los Angeles next year I will try to remember to load up with folding chairs.
The player’s party was well attended. Fun music was played throughout the night. The dance floor was very active with plenty of “sick” moves. They served several tasty pastas, salad, bread, yummy dessert and the NSWTA kept the complimentary wine flowing.
I liked that the matches were kept on schedule and that the finals were designated for stadium court with officials. Also, despite the heat, Palm Desert seemed to be protected from the huge Santa Ana winds that were happening in California. Another perk was that my doubles partner and I discovered authentic Mexican food in a hole-in-the-wall strip mall. The desert locals didn’t even know about it and it was close to the club.
Go Kandy and Andrea!
