In the 35 singles unseeded Nicoleta Scott from Vancouver BC took out second seeded Rachel Hardecke in the semis and top seed Laura Graff in the final. The 35s doubles was played as a round robin with Tarrin Dougery and Wakana Turner from Marin County in NorCal, winning all their matches.
Top seed Mariko Atoji from San Diego prevailed in the 45 singles, defeating second seeded Michele Mouttapa-Matek 6-2, 7-5 in the final. Tracie Currie and Debbie Spence Nassim won the 45 doubles, losing only 3 games in the tournament.
Top seeded Nathalie Herreman-Bagby defeated second seed Kateryna Filyus in the 50’s singles final. In the 50’s doubles top seeds Alissa Finerman and Nathalie Herreman-Bagby had a good final with second seeds Michele Rudi and Rochelle Whelan from the Seattle area, winning 6-4, 6-2.
The 55 doubles was won by Karenann Broe and Karen Burns from San Diego who took the final 6-3, 6-1 over Susie Duffy and Wendy Elliott from Corona Del Mar who had taken out Daren Collins and Krystal Meier, the top seeds, in the quarters.
Susan Wright won a tough match featuring very long points over Shannon Gordon-Carnay, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the final. The women’s 60 doubles final featured four multiple gold ball winning players with Shannon Gordon-Carnay and Susan Wright defeating Tina Karwasky and Tracey Thompson 6-2, 6-3 in the final.
Tina Karwasky defeated Andrea Barnes in the 65s final. Barnes and Leslie Airola-Murveit prevailed in a tough 3-set match over Julie David and Kandy Chain in the doubles final.
The two seed Fay Matsumoto beat top seeded Carmen Almodovar 6-2, 7-6 in the 70s singles final. In the doubles final, she and partner Janis Hasse did the same thing, defeating top seeds Kathleen Bennett and Dee Williams-Horne in the 70s doubles final.
Carolann Castell, the two seed defeated top seeded Cathy Anderson in a long 7-5 in the third set to win the 75s. In the doubles Gail Halverson and Ledean Nilsen upset top seeded Anderson and Judy Louie in the quarterfinal but lost to Jane Pang and Anne Russ in the semis. Carolann Castell and Heather Fiscalini, the second seeds, won the final over Pang and Russ.
Roz King had to battle to defeat second seeded Nanda Fischer 6-2, 3-6, 6 - 2 in the women’s 80s final.
The Wilson World Tennis Classic was played for the first time at Shadow Mountain Resort in Palm Desert under the direction of Caerwyn Evans after many years at Mission Hills. The tournament features all age groups in women’s men’s and mixed. Due to its size it is played in many venues in the Palm Desert area.
